Bellies, Fall, and Water That Sits

A belly is a low section of lateral that holds water instead of draining it, and it appears on a camera survey as standing water where the run should be empty. Fall rather than material is the cause, so clearing the line removes the symptom and leaves the geometry exactly as it was.

What a belly is

A belly is a section that has sagged below the run’s grade, so it holds water instead of draining. Solids entering it slow down, drop out of suspension and stay. The pipe is undamaged; its shape is wrong.

Why this is the plastic-era problem

Solvent-welded PVC and ABS do not corrode and give roots no joint to exploit. So when a lateral laid since about 1990 backs up repeatedly, material is rarely the answer. What is usually wrong is how it was laid, or what happened to the ground afterwards: bedding that was never properly compacted, a trench that settled, a section crushed during later construction.

How it shows on camera

Standing water where the run should be empty. That is the whole tell, and it is why a survey should be recorded rather than described — a still frame of water in a level pipe is something you can hold a contractor to.

Why clearing it is not a fix

Rodding a belly empties it. Gravity refills it. The cycle that follows tracks water usage rather than time, which is a useful thing to notice: a backup that follows a full house or a heavy laundry day, rather than arriving every few months, points at fall.

What fixes it

Re-laying the affected section to grade. Lining does not, because a liner follows the host pipe and a lined belly is still a belly. This is one of the cases where trenchless is the wrong tool and it is worth understanding why — lining against bursting.
