When the Same Backup Keeps Coming Back

A backup that returns after clearing is telling you the clearing was not the fix. Roots regrow into the same joint, a belly refills, and a pipe that has lost its section was never blocked to begin with, so the next step is a camera survey rather than another rodding.

A one-off blockage is an event. A blockage that returns on a cycle is a symptom, and the length of the cycle is diagnostic in a way most homeowners are never told.

Why clearing it works, and then stops working

Rodding or jetting removes what has collected in a pipe. If the pipe is sound and something simply accumulated, that fixes it and it stays fixed. If the pipe itself is the restriction — a joint that has dropped, a section that has gone oval, an invert lined with scale, a belly holding water — then clearing removes the accumulation and leaves the restriction. Material starts collecting again immediately, and you are on a schedule.

What the interval tells you

Roughly, and with the caveat that only a camera settles it:

Months, reliably — a persistent restriction. Something is narrowing the run and nothing has addressed it.
After heavy use rather than after time — capacity, not blockage. The run copes until volume rises. Often fall.
Seasonally, worse in spring — roots. They grow when the tree does. See where roots get in.
Getting shorter each time — the restriction is progressing. This is the pattern that should stop you agreeing to another clearance.

What to ask for instead

If you have paid for the same visit more than twice, the next thing to buy is not a third clearance. It is a camera survey and the recording that comes with it — what it should show you. A contractor who has cleared your line twice already has a good idea of what is down there, and asking for the recording turns that into something you can act on and take to a second opinion.
