What This Costs, and Why No One Quotes It Online

No price range appears on this page, deliberately. A national figure for lateral repair averages together jobs with almost nothing in common, because the same fault at the same depth is a different job under lawn, under a driveway and under a public street.
Every site in this business puts a price range on this page. We are not going to, and the reason is the most useful thing we can tell you about what a lateral costs.
Why a range would be dishonest
A national range for "sewer line repair" averages together jobs that have almost nothing in common. The same fault, in the same pipe, at the same depth, is a different job depending on what is above it and how far along the run it sits. A quoted range wide enough to be true is too wide to be useful, and one narrow enough to be useful is not true.
We are paid when we connect a call, not on the value of the work. We have no reason to anchor you high and none to anchor you low. What we can do is tell you what actually moves the number.
What actually moves the number
- Distance to the fault. A fault at 8 feet and the same fault at 45 feet are different excavations. This is why a survey that reports distances is worth more than one that reports a verdict.
- Depth. Deeper trenches need shoring and take longer, and the cost does not rise in a straight line with depth.
- What is on top. Lawn, driveway, mature tree, sidewalk, public street. Frequently the single largest difference between two honest quotes — see permits and restoration.
- Whether the fault crosses the property line. Which may change the permit, the restoration standard and occasionally who pays — see who pays for the lateral.
- Material and its condition. Whether the run can be lined at all, or needs replacing, or needs upsizing — see lining against bursting.
- Access for plant. A back garden reachable only through a house is a different job from a front yard a machine can drive onto.
How to get a number you can trust
Get the run surveyed and get the recording. Then take the recording — not the first contractor’s description of it — to a second contractor. Two quotes against the same evidence are comparable. Two quotes against two separate site visits usually are not, because you cannot tell whether they are pricing the same fault.
What should be itemized
Ask for the survey, the excavation, the pipe work, the permit and the restoration as separate lines. A single figure hides which part you are actually paying for, and it is normally the excavation and restoration rather than the pipe — which is also why the lowest quote is sometimes the one that has quietly left restoration out.
One thing worth knowing before you call anyone
If you have already paid for the same line to be cleared more than twice, that money was spent on the symptom. The next thing to buy is the survey — when the same backup keeps coming back.
