Clay Laterals and Where Roots Get In

Clay does not corrode. It fails at its joints, which sit every few feet along the run and give roots somewhere to enter, so a recurring backup on clay is a question of how many joints are affected rather than whether the pipe has worn out.

Root intrusion is the commonest finding on an old clay lateral, and it is routinely described backwards. Roots do not force their way into sound pipe. They exploit a joint that has already opened.

Why the joints

Clay went in as short lengths, so an old run has a joint every few feet. Each one is a seal, and seals fail before ceramic does. Once a joint has opened even slightly, it leaks water and nutrients into the surrounding soil, which is precisely what a root grows toward.

The City of San Luis Obispo states that clay pipes typically last for 50 to 60 years. Any clay lateral still in service has passed that.

Cutting roots is not a repair

A rotating cutter clears the root mass and restores flow. It does not close the joint the roots came through, and the tree is still there. This is the classic recurring backup on a seasonal cycle.

The question that decides the job

It is not how much root there is. It is whether the run still holds its line. Roots at one or two joints on an otherwise aligned pipe is a lining job. A length that has parted or dropped is not: a liner follows the host pipe, so it reproduces the misalignment rather than correcting it. That is the single question to put to whoever surveys the run.
