Cast iron laterals went into the ground mainly on the house side of the boundary from the 1940s onward, alongside clay and later early PVC. They lose capacity gradually rather than suddenly, so a run can be failing for years without a single backup to announce it.

Cast iron was standard on the house side of the boundary for decades and remained common well into the 1980s. It is strong, it is heavy, and where it is protected it lasts.

How cast iron fails

Cast iron corrodes from the inside, along the bottom of the pipe, where waste sits longest. The corrosion channels the invert and leaves scale standing proud of the surface. Nothing dramatic happens; the pipe simply carries less than it used to, and catches more of what passes through it.

That is why a cast iron lateral rarely announces itself. There is no single failure to point at — the run gets slower over years, and the household adapts to it until something finally will not clear.

What a survey should show

On cast iron the survey is looking at the bottom of the pipe. Corrosion channels along the invert and leaves scale that catches everything passing, so what looks like a blockage is often lost bore.

Why the quote can look strange

A contractor looking at lost bore is not quoting to remove a blockage, because there is no blockage to remove. They are quoting to restore capacity, which means lining or replacing a length. If a quote for a slow drain comes back far higher than expected, this is usually why, and it is worth asking to see the recording.
