Orangeburg, and How to Tell If You Have It
In short
Build era is the first test: bituminized fiber went into the ground from 1948 and stayed code-legal into the late 1970s, so a house from that span cannot rule it out by date alone. Only a camera survey settles it, by showing whether the pipe still has a round section.
Orangeburg is the one lateral material where the usual advice actively misleads, because the usual advice is to check the build year.
The dates do not rule it out
PHCP Pros cites an AP report giving 1940 to 1970 for its use connecting homes to public sewers. The City of San Luis Obispo says it was commonly used from 1948 into the 1970s. And PHCP Pros quotes the City of Tempe, whose records indicate the Uniform Plumbing Code allowed bituminous fiber sewer pipe between 1955 and 1982.
Those windows do not agree, and that is the point. A house built in 1974 is not too new for Orangeburg, and one built in 1946 is not too old. The material has to be identified, not inferred.
How to tell
On camera it is unmistakable once you know what you are looking at: a dull, dark, seamless wall with no socket joints and no corrosion, often visibly out of round. If a length has been dug up, it is light, it is fibrous at a cut end, and it does not ring like clay or iron.
Why clearing it does not last
Orangeburg does not crack. It deforms — the City of San Luis Obispo notes it was recognized early on that fiber conduit pipe tended to deform under concentrated pressures over long periods. An oval run has no blockage in it. The pipe is the restriction, so a clearance removes what has collected and leaves the cause. That is why these lines come back on a schedule — see when the same backup keeps coming back.
What that means for the quote
Lining follows the host pipe, so a run that has lost its section is generally a replacement rather than a lining job. Of the trenchless methods, only pipe bursting can increase the diameter, because it breaks the old pipe outward and pulls a new one through — lining against bursting.
More on the material: Orangeburg pipe.
